The United Kingdom has achieved near equal status for LGBT people, and acceptance of gay people has evolved significantly in recent times, especially in the past 20 years. The country recognised Civil Partnerships in 2005 with full adoption rights and is expected to introduce gay marriage.
Today the UK has a calendar filled with gay events with most major towns hosting a gay pride festival between May and September. The most famous gay prides are those of Brighton and Manchester in August, and London in July. London played host to EuroPride in 2006 and World Pride in 2012. The London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in March is a very popular event showcasing the best new releases in queer cinema, however tickets do sell fast.
There are a number of large cities on this ninth largest island in the world that offer a varied and thriving gay nightlife including Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, and Edinburgh. Most of the action takes place in city centres often with a specific gay district the most famous of these being London’s Soho and Vauxhall Village, Manchester’s Canal Street and Brighton’s Kemp Town.
GAY Heaven in London is the most renowned gay club in the country while Legends in Brighton and The Embassy in Manchester are also very popular gay nightspots.
