A former part of Czechoslovakia, the country has emerged from being a communist state but not quite reached the more socially liberal status of its neighbor the Czech Republic, though as a part of Europe homosexuality is legal. Slovakia’s capital, Bratislava, has held a gay pride only since May 2010 that was greeted by violent right-wing groups. The rest of the country is quite conservative and hasn’t been too used to international tourists.Bratislava has developed over the last few years especially when it entered the Euro in 2009, the city had a makeover and it feels like a small modern European city. The gay nightlife is a little hidden away, so planning is required, however once there it is upbeat with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere where the music continues until the early hours. Appollon Club is by far the most popular with two bars and three rooms, the drinks are still relatively inexpensive here, so watch how easily it is to down the beers. There is a lot of history in Slovakia and in Bratislava alone you will find an aray of well-conditioned historic buildings, with a castle, a number of churches and public houses with stunning restaurants. Outside Bratislava go to the 14th century town of Levoca to see the biggest wooden alter in the world, or Spis Castle – one of the largest castles in Central Europe, perhaps even visit one of three aragonite caves in the world in the South of Slovakia, or even the Dobsinska Ice Cave. Slovakia is still putting itself on the map – so it may well be a destination en vogue in a few years.
