Lesbian and Gay Travel in Hungary

Hungary recognised same-sex relationships in 2009 but placed a ban on gay marriage from 2012. The capital city, Budapest hosts the annual gay price event in June-July that has been going since 1997 and in 2012 it will host the EuroGames.

On the most part gay Hungarians are discrete and rarely visible and this is extremely apparent even in Budapest.  Budapest is the centre of the gay life in Hungary however it is small and at first difficult to come by. A few of the bars are hidden in basements behind very discrete doors.

Action Bar in Budapest is one of the most popular cruise clubs, this basement bar hidden behind a small single door entrance is open most nights with some sort of striptease and dancing entertainment. Coxx is a trendy gay club, Pure is the biggest gay party in Budapest, while Capella Café has drag shows, though not exclusively gay.

The main place to visit in Hungary is Budapest, a wonderful city to explore by foot crossing the city of two parts of Buda and Pest by the Danube River. The country is famed for its roman spas, lively culture and friendly nature of the locals. Go into the countryside off the beaten track to explore old villages or the vineyards of the south, explore caves created by thermal springs or visit Lake Balaton, the biggest lake in Central Europe.
