Hungary recognised same-sex relationships in 2009 but placed a ban on gay marriage from 2012. The capital city, Budapest hosts the annual gay price event in June-July that has been going since 1997 and in 2012 it will host the EuroGames.
On the most part gay Hungarians are discrete and rarely visible and this is extremely apparent even in Budapest. Budapest is the centre of the gay life in Hungary however it is small and at first difficult to come by. A few of the bars are hidden in basements behind very discrete doors.
